Product Description

There are millions of new motorcyclists hitting the blacktop every year. But being part of the American motorcycle culture takes more than just wanting to be cool. It takes a passion for the open road, freedom, and a lifestyle that even the best financing cant buy. This book, by someone who knows motorcycles as few do, provides a road map to biker culture for anyone new to the experience. Jay Barbieri explains everything a new rider needs to know to become a real biker. He begins with a brief history of motorcycles, and draws on his twenty-five years of riding experience for examples of what works and doesn't in this heady world. Most of all, he aims to spare new bikers the bad decisions neophytes typically make. With hundreds of motorcycle trips under his belt, there is not a mistake Barbieri hasn't made or a situation he hasn't encountered. By sharing the sometimes comical outcomes, he gives the new biker a head start to become more comfortable, credible, and knowledgeable about joining a community that is as much a part of American culture as baseball, hotdogs and apple pie.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but................................   July 10, 2010

"Bikers handbook" is not bad but if you don't ride a Harley you may be disapointed? He does offer some humor and talks of 1%-ers with respect. I am not a 1%-er but know a few. If your new to riding motorcycles or are planning to then this may be a good read for you before you buy. It's a quick read and enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars There are better books   December 29, 2009

This book is about partying and Harley Davidson. It appears the author isn't a biker, but a frat boy. It also offers unsound safety advice. In all, it's a highly biased, egotistical read.

If you're going to learn to ride, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles" is a much better guide, complete with a buying guide that will make choosing your bike a breeze. I bought the 2nd edition, which has served me well, but they're up to the 4th edition now. An up-to-date buying guide will be helpful, although you'll probably want to pick up a used bike that's a few years old to save yourself some cash.

While bartending at the Sturgis rally, Jay and friends have frequented our bar regurlarly. Jay and friends are always welcome at the Loud. I will have the book behind the bar ready for an autograph.

This is a fantastic insight into the world of the motorcylce culture. Me, being a novice in the Bike World appreciate the fact that someone took the time to WRITE A BOOK and has given insight into the Bike World. Can't wait to get a group of friends and experience riding into Daytona Bike Week for the first time because that is what your book has inspired me to do. Thank you.

This book is about having fun on two wheels. I had a good laugh and enjoyed the adventure. If you looking for a tech book this is not it. The author did a great job of not preaching and giving helpful information through some hilarious stories. I've been riding for over 20 years and loved it!
