5 out of 5 stars Excellent   December 28, 2009
Bridgette M. Barker
This book is EXCELLENT, and as promised, really good for beginners and advanced engine techs! My boyfriend has loads of experience, whereas, I am new to the world of small block engines and have a desire to know how my car works from the ground up.

I recently bought a 1967 Impala and have been spending a lot of time researching what new engine I want under her hood. She is running the 283 right now, original motor, so at the very least, my 43 year old baby will need a complete rebuild.

This book is LOADED with photo's and is written in plain english so anyone can understand it. It could even be called a recipe book for engines, as it tells you what you will need, how to prepare the parts (including removal and disassembly from the engine compartment), then what should be inspected, machine shopped, repaired and replaced. Instructions are to the letter and only adds to my own excitement of getting under my car's "skirts" to make her better than ever. Thanks Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Seems To Be In Demand   August 25, 2009

I purchased this book prior to buying my SBC engine, eventually a V8 283. I flipped through it, pretty much clueless. Anyway, I picked up an engine; the guy I bought it from was kind enough to start building it for me. Guess what! He had this book, also. Once he pointed out what items I might need for a decent engine; this book started to make sense.

This book, for me, is informational. It gives some detail(s) that is needed, although sometimes not enough. I have been able to gather the information I need to build a respectale 283 engine with some horsepower. Some areas of this book have been highlighted by me more than others but, again, I'm building a 283.

I, also, found out that my Lead-worker at my job had picked up this book from the library, he thought it was helpful, also. He's building a V8 350. To supplement the info in this book, I also, purchased How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet: Step-by-Step Videobook (S-A Design Video Workbench), which is another good book in its own right to have laying around.

The author of his book no doubt knows his stuff when it comes to the small block. The book is a good overall primer to the mouse motor in terms of history, particulars of diagnosis, rebuild etc.
I do have a hard time following the order and logic of the directions. I would also recommend purchasing a Chiltons or some such book to accompany How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy. They seem to work well together for my 85 FJ60 Landcruiser with a 1992 Chevy 305 tbi. Overall a good book for a rebuild and diagnosis.

5 out of 5 stars Best with data and best to read   February 28, 2006

After years of reading, and turning wrenches I think this is the best so far.
Not only for readability (is this English?) but also specifications.
This book tells you When to pull the engine and Why.
Then tons of specific data will be given and even more important how and
where to measure!!
If you ever go in this kind of stuff, rebuilding your engine, this book is a good buy.

BR. Arnoud.

This book has everything you wanted to know about the Chevy Smallblock. It gets kinda wordy, and very technical for someone who just wants to play around. If you are serious about rebuilding the Chevy Smallblock perfectly then get this book
